Planning
your network
KVS can be used on a single computer or in a network. If you have a network
consisting of several computers, you may want to consider the following ideas:
- The database should reside on a server where it is regularly backed up.
Once you begin using KVS, it will quickly become essential to your daily
operations. The last thing you want is to lose your data to a computer
failure. Daily backups are a must!
- If you are using a full version of SQL Server, you can configure
backups through the administrative tools delivered with SQL Server.
- If you are using MSDE (essentially a trial version of SQL Server), you
have no administrative tools. This means that you have to perform
backups manually. You must stop the database server, so that the files
are unlocked. You can then back them up. Afterwards, you must restart
the database server.
- KVS allows teachers to use the system. Teachers can view and print
information about the courses they teach, inspect their salary information,
enter attendance lists, and so forth. You may want to place a machine in the
teachers' lounge or work area, so that they have easy access to KVS.
