Course Types

Course types define general categories of courses. This concept helps with the organization of courses and eliminates the need to enter the same data repeatedly, when defining courses.

A course type contains information common to an entire set of similar courses. It defines common attributes such as course size, bonuses paid to teachers, and prices paid by students. For example, possible course types could be: a small-group semester course, or a diploma course for which teachers are paid for the additional work of correcting homework.

Course type. When you create a new course type, you must first define the name of the new type. The name should be meaningful, for example "small-group semester" rather than "type A".

Min. Students. Enter the minimum number of students for this course type. This number represents the smallest number of students for which a course of this type will normally be offered. In later versions of KVS, this number will be used in course counseling, to help you organize new courses.

Max. Students. Enter the maximum number of students for this course type. This number represents the largest number of students that can normally be enrolled in a course of this type. This number is used in course counseling, to tell you when a course is full.

Cancel if below. Enter the number of participants, below which events should be cancelled. If the number of students attending a particular event drops below this number, the event will appear in the Daily Schedule, under the Attendance report.

Credit for cancellations. If this box is checked, then students for whom event-cancellations are entered will not be debited for the event. If this box is not checked, then students will always be debited, whether or not they attend and whether or not an event-cancellation is entered.

Semester course. If this box is checked, then all courses of this type are semester courses. This means that course events only take place during defined semesters (semesters are defined under Parameters:Semesters).

Speed. Enter the average progress-per-lesson that courses of this type are expected to achieve. You may define the meaning of this number any way you like; for example, the number of chapters in a book. This value serves as the default value for newly defined courses.

Bonuses - Set the bonuses awarded to teachers for this course type. These bonuses will be used by default for all courses of this type, however, you can customize the bonuses for individual courses from the course edit-window.

Individual prices. This button opens a window in which you define prices for individuals purchasing lessons. You select price names to use with this course type, and define the price amounts and validity dates to go with them. For example, if you have defined the price name "standard", you can set the price to be 100 per lesson from 1 January 2001, and then 110 per lesson beginning 1 January 2002.

Group prices. Similar to individual prices, but for groups.
