Command Line Options

KVS supports a number of command-line options. These can be added to the shortcuts that you use to start KVS - see the shortcuts in the Programs menu for examples.

/install Start KVS in installation mode. This is useful for creating the KVS registration database during initial installation, and for updating your license key.
/user XXX Replace XXX with one of the standard privilege levels, e.g., "Management" or "Basic". KVS will pre-select this in the Login window.
/password YYY If a privilege level has been specified, YYY gives the password (this may be enclosed in double quotes, if desired). If both privilege level and password are correct, KVS will skip the login window. Using this parameter is a security risk - your password can be read by anyone with access to your machine.
/user individual Start KVS in the mode where teachers and students can log in. An altered login window appears, filled with the names of teachers and students for whom passwords are defined.
/no_maint This option should only be used by your system administrator, or upon request by KVS support team.

Prevent KVS from doing periodic maintenance. (Beginning with KVS 3.5)

The first time KVS is started each day, it transfers the day's events and projected attendance lists to the archives. Thereafter, KVS performs other periodic housecleaning tasks once per hour.KVS performs a number of periodic tasks once each hour.

Depending on your network configuration, you may wish to prohibit KVS from doing periodic maintenance from particular machines, for example, if a machine is particularly slow or unreliable. However, please note that periodic maintenance must be performed - do not disable it on all machines!

/log This option should only be used by your system administrator, or upon request by KVS support team.

Using this option causes KVS to generate a log file that records many of its internal activities. This can help support personnel identify problems. The log file is named "kvs.log" and is stored in the KVS application directory - hence, the user running KVS with this option must have write-permission to this directory.

The output can be restricted by specifying one of the following values:

  • "database" - only record information related to database activities
  • "accounting" - only record information related to the accounting interface
  • "documents" - only record information related to document and report generation
